John Hall ( 1704 - 1782 )


John Hall was born in Middleton-by-Wirksworth early in 1703/04 and was baptised at St. Mary's, Wirksworth on 28th January 1703/04. He was the son of John Hall and Hellen Doxey. John married Lydia Roose (born in July 1712 in Cromford) the daughter of Joshua Roose and Lydia Coates, on 4th November 1731.

John and Lydia had nine children:
  • Sarah Hall, born 1732 Middleton-by-Wirksworth
  • Ebenezer Hall, born in 1735 Middleton-by-Wirksworth, died in Jun 1803, married Lydia Gregory (born in June 1733, died in October 1790) on 29th October 1759
  • Hannah Hall, born in 1737 in Middleton-by-Wirksworth
  • Lydia Hall, born in 1740 in Middleton-by-Wirksworth, married Edward Wheatcroft, a miner from Wirksworth, on 8th May 1766
  • Ellen Hall, born in 1742 in Middleton-by-Wirksworth
  • Elizabeth Hall, born in 1745 in Middleton-by-Wirksworth, died in 1746
  • Molly Hall, born in 1747 in Middleton-by-Wirksworth
  • John Hall, born in 1750 in Middleton-by-Wirksworth
  • Joshua Hall, born in 1753 in Middleton-by-Wirksworth
John hall was a lead miner and a member of the Barmote Court. The Barmaster's Book begun in 1735, contains a reference in 1746 to John Hall as one of the 24, i.e. a juryman of the Barmote Court. The Vicarage Tithe Award Books (now held at Derbyshire Record Office in Matlock) refer to John Hall and Jabus Hall at the Goodluck Mine. A paper dated 14th December 1780 from the Duchy of Lancaster's records in the Public Record Office relates to a disputed claim by Joseph Dixie of Hopton Moor, and states:

"John Hall, aged 80 says he was present as one of the Grand Jurors and gave away and dispossessed the Scrins in Hopton Wood when Stephen Bagshaw was Barmaster and Thomas Doxy was the other Juryman; it was done about forty years ago; and he has the Particulars down in writing which he can produce if necessary."

John was buried at Wirksworth on 14th November 1782, Lydia was buried on 22nd May 1793.
